EXHIBITION DESIGN
MAEDEUP; heart
WKND Lab (Lee Halin, Jun Eunji) reinterprets traditional elements into contemporary objects based on material research, developing works that cross the boundaries of design and craft, everyday life and space.
By translating the forms and symbols of traditional culture into a contemporary lifestyle, the studio focuses on conveying both function and meaning within a space.
Overview
<heart> is a multi-functional cushion and stool that reinterprets traditional Korean knot-making techniques through a contemporary lens.
Created in collaboration with a bedding artisan with over 30 years of experience, the work preserves traditional knotting methods while using sustainable, cruelty-free materials.
Approach
The human-scaled object incorporates various Korean knots, including the chrysanthemum knot symbolizing prosperity and success, and the ring knot representing promise and connection.
Challenge
Blending sculptural form with functionality, the piece functions both as a decorative object and as furniture for sitting and resting.
Through collaboration with traditional artisans, the project reflects on sustainability, continuity, and the enduring value of craft.
